The story takes place at the end of the Second World War, the protagonist of which, 9-year-old boy, Andreas Gross. He lives in Berlin with his father, a Communist who fights against National Socialism. One day after the bombing of their warning that the police will come and they run away to a country village. Jew Elias Shmaksteyn who owns a garden house where they hid, asks them to keep an eye on Jewish girl Rachel, they take themselves and give out for cousin Andreas.
