In Pierreville, Quebec, Mylia begins high school. She lives with her younger sister Camille and her parents, Nathalie and Henri, near Odanak, an Abenaki First Nation reserve. Camille is harassed by her classmates, and Mylia is her only friend. At her new school, Mylia meets Jacinthe, a repeater, who, noticing Mylia taking notes during history class, invites her to come to her house to help her with her homework, and eventually invites her to a party. During the party, Mylia drinks excessively. On the way home, she feels ill; Jimmy takes her home and Jimmy's grandmother lets her recover on his couch.
