An Eastern European Jewish ghetto in 1944. Jakob Heym is sent for allegedly exceeding the curfew from one post to the Gestapo station. By chance, he comes with his life, and by chance he has there is a message about the advance of the Red Army on the radio. He wants to pass on the message to his fellow sufferers to make them hope, but is afraid they would keep him for his 'connection' to the Gestapo for a spy. So he resorts to a lie, pretending to have hidden a radio. People in the ghetto draw new courage, there is no more suicides, and one would of Jacob always new information on the rise. It must continue to lie, so there is hope. His friend Kowalski helps to spread the messages can even be beat up by a guard to protect Jacob and seeks to find the toilet paper shreds from the Nazis' true message.
