The action takes place in Wallachia in 1835. Two representatives of the
law, the veteran captain Kostandin and his frail offspring Ionice,
travel the country in search of the gypsy slave Karfin, who has run away
with a large sum of money from his master, the influential boyar
Yordache. Traces lead them now to a gypsy camp, then to the local
monastery. Finally they succeed in catching the fugitive in the house of
the artisan who sheltered him. Having bound and shackled Karfin, the
lawmen set off on their way back. On their way they learn that the
gypsy, who faces cruel punishment, is in fact innocent: his misdeed is
that he was seduced by his master's wife...
