Die Klage der Kaiserin (1990)

Die Klage der Kaiserin (1990)

The film is a performance that is a classic of German expressionist dance. This plastic narrative is subordinated to the change of seasons: autumn, winter, spring. There is no plot and history here, but there is a collage of alternating scenes-associations and moods. The action takes place in a forest, in a field in the vicinity of Wuppertal, a town where Bausch has her own school and theater, in the city center, in a rehearsal hall built in a former cinema. But the leitmotif of the film – the futility of human efforts and the endless search for love - is revealed in the intense trampling of the swamp. There is very little dance, rather it is such a surreal atmospheric video art with her favorite themes of sadness, absurdity and paradox of the relationship between a man and a woman.
