The film is based on Stefan Aust's book and tells of the early years of the West German far left revolutionary organization Red Army Faction (RAF), which was the most active and most important terrorist group in post-war West Germany. The book and film focus on the RAF from its beginnings in 1967-1968 until the "German Autumn" of 1977.
