In the city of La Ciénaga (Salta) live Tali and her husband Rafael, who have four young children. Some ninety miles away is the farm Mandrake, where it is harvested and dried red peppers, and where it spends the summer his cousin Wick, a woman cincuentona, together with her husband, Gregory, and their four teenage children. Joseph, the eldest of the sons of Mecha, lives in Buenos Aires with Mercedes, who is her co-worker and his girlfriend. Many years before Mercedes had been a lover of Gregory, husband of Wick and father of Joseph. Mercedes had also been a fellow of the faculty of Wick and Tali.
