The multi-part series describes the first three decades of life of Maximiliane Irene von Quindt, who was born at the end of 1918, in the final phase of the first World War, on the estate Poenichen owned by her grandfather. She never gets to know her father, as he falls in the last days of the war. Her Berlin-born mother Vera, who can't do anything with the child, soon leaves her at her grandparents ' estate to plunge back into city life, later marrying a Jewish doctor. Maximiliane grows up with the old Quindts and learns of their world.
