The young Tino arrives in Venice where he goes to live with his uncle and his aunt (Catherine Deneuve), who live in a splendid old palace once but now in disrepair. His aunt, unsure of herself, warmly welcomed him ; his uncle seemed authoritarian and distant. Tino goes to a Drawing School where he meets Lucia. At night, Tino hears strange footsteps that seem to come from the attic of the house, then a melody played on a piano. Curious to know what happens in this mysterious house, he discovers little by little a past that continues to haunt those who live there.
