The series, based on Mary Wesley's novel motifs, begins at a funeral where relatives gather and each carries a fragment of the fate of one English family during World War II. The central characters are Richard and Helena and their nieces and nephews - their love, disappointment, fatal wounds and the horrors associated with war.
