The Grand départ is a French film directed by Martial Raysse, released in 1972. After a meal like many others: a couple at the empty look in front of a television screen, immersed in a digestion blissful; and then, breaking with the sudden arrival and quick a young man, and his escape by motorbike. With him, the director leads us into a “festival in reverse”; the logical order is reversed; the characters change their identity; they borrow their masks in turn to animal (cat Cain), heroes of mythology (Mr. Kind), to famous paintings. The allusions to the painting are numerous: Leonardo da Vinci, Millet, Delacroix, and even contemporary: Art, and, of course, Martial Raysse (the director is a painter). The colours take those negatives to a photo: the roses blotter turning suddenly to the green, and the purple faded to blue; the categories, determinations, common vanish into the visual effects are fluid and unexpected. These mysterious creatures speak of the “great departure” and seek the “paradise”. This quest leads them to a sort of community hippie where the dream has chased away the reality. They find themselves on a raft subjected to cosmic events indefinable; the nightmare and the wonderful become inseparable. The disasters follow one another; the fantasies, the hopes disappear, washed away in a flood of images and evanescent that dissolve in confusion and crumbling in horror! The great departure? The quest of paradise? With who? To what? As it seems, “alas, that there is no other paradise than the one where we are”.
