The working-class family Braten live in the top floor of a tenement house in the outskirts of Oslo. The family consists of three sons and two daughters as well as mother and father in one room and a kitchen. Mother Hulda is the family's focal point while Braten itself is a silent and withdrawn works. The children contribute in their own way that the neighbors are right when they exclaimed: Never anything but trouble!
